Contemporary Australian Indigenous artist Kumanjayi Pwerle was born in 1941 on Old McDonald Station in central Australia. An Anmatyerre speaker his traditional country stretched from the Sandover River on Utopia through to west on to Mt Skinner Station. He lived at Mosquito Bore, Utopia central Australia with his partners Carol and Elizabeth Kngwarreye and extended family.
As a highly respected Elder of Utopia, he was senior custodian of a series of dreaming sites in particular for the Bush Turkey Ancestor, Emu (Ankerr) and Lizard (Arlewatyerr).
His intricate work is characterised by his use of dark earthy colours and of geometric shapes outlined in dots, to represent the tracks of the Bush Turkey roaming across the bushland as it searches for tucker. Viewed from a topographical point of view his works have a dark intensity and depth, recalling the relief and colours of his country. His works are like an Indigenous map tracking long journeys of the Bush Turkey, Lizard and Emu Ancestors punctuated with stops at soakages and the like.
His work has been exhibited in galleries all over the world. Lead role in Utopia Generations, Sandover Films directed by Viviana Petyarre.

Eastern Desert Art is a member of the Indigenous Art Code of Conduct and the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia and sells directly to collectors and galleries nationally and internationally.
To demonstrate provenance, artworks are sold with an Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct Certificate. These Certificates provide the purchaser with information on the artist, the story of their painting (when permitted by the artist under cultural law) and photographs of the artists with their paintings. The artworks are painted on prepared Belgian linen using polymer acrylics.
The local Alyawarre and Anmatyerre artists prepare and work on their paintings at the Eastern Desert art shed located on our property adjacent to Utopia.
