Artist Information

Mary Kemarre Morton was one of the senior women bosses on Utopia. She had responsibility for painting body designs on young women initiates and singing Awleye songs to encourage their fertility and teaches the tribal dreamings or rules of life.

Kurrajong dreaming

Her country is on the northern end of Utopia and she has custodial responsibility for the Kurrajong tree seed. Mary was passionately involved in maintaining traditional practices that ensure social cohesion.

This painting celebrates the Kurrajong tree. Leaves are ground and mixed with animal fat to create a topical ointment, or with water as a drinking solution. There is an ancient Dreamtime story belonging which lies in the heart of Alyawarre land in Mary’s country, on Utopia north east of Alice Springs. Leaf-like designs represent the Kurrajong flower living among the lizard-like creatures.
