Artist Information

Dinny's naive paintings of outback football and horse racing depict vibrant images of the passions of the local Alyawarre in their homelands in central Australia. The annual Harts Range Races is a three day sports weekend held at Atitjere north east of Alice Springs. His paintings of this bush race meeting are cleverly illustrated with every type of truck, car, spectators of all ages and colour, dogs and other quirky touches. His paintings are lively, funny and colourful.

One of Kunoth’s great passions is bush footy which is a take on Australian rules football. At Utopia, each community/outstation imitates and adopts an AFL team. The community AFL teams are named after and wear the uniform/colours of the AFL’s teams. Some of the local teams include the Soapy Bore Crows, Irrultja Port Power, Apungalingum Eagles, the Mulga Bore Magpies, Arlparra Dockers and Arnkawenyerr Swans. Across Central Australia, Indigenous players and their families see bush footy as an opportunity to connect with their neighbours and their relatives in other towns. It’s like a religion for the locals. Kunoth’s passion is evident in his portrayals of the game’s recording of minuscule quirky details.

Exhibitions celebrating these paintings have been held in exhibitions in Melbourne and at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
